Questions to Navigate Home Health Care

What is home health care?
Home health care provides skilled medical services in a patient’s home under the direction of a physician. Services may include skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and medical social services.
Does Medicare cover home health care?
Medicare may cover home health services when a physician orders care and eligibility requirements are met. Covered services may include skilled nursing, therapy services, and certain home health aide services related to a skilled plan of care.
Do I need a doctor’s order for home health services?
Yes. Medicare-certified home health services require a physician’s order and documentation that home health care is medically necessary.  Even if Medicare doesn’t cover the services, a doctor’s order is required for clinical services.  Our team works with local physicians and can assist in getting appropriate orders, if needed.
How do I know if my loved one needs home health care?
Signs may include a recent hospitalization, difficulty managing medications, frequent falls, declining mobility, worsening chronic conditions, or trouble completing daily activities safely.
What does a home health nurse do?
A skilled nurse may provide medication management, wound care, disease education, injections, IV therapy, monitoring of chronic conditions, and communication with physicians.
Can I choose my home health agency?
Yes. Patients have the right to choose their preferred home health care provider-  we hope you will choose us!
What is the difference between physical therapy and occupational therapy?
Physical therapy focuses on strength, balance, walking, mobility, and fall prevention. Occupational therapy helps patients safely complete daily activities such as bathing, dressing, cooking, and household tasks.
Can home health help prevent hospital readmissions?
Yes. Home health clinicians monitor patients closely, provide education, help manage medications, and identify concerns early to help reduce the risk of returning to the hospital.
Can seniors safely age in place?

Is non-medical home care covered by Medicare?
Medicare generally does not cover long-term non-medical home care or companion care. Families who need ongoing personal care or private-duty support may need to explore private pay, long-term care insurance, VA benefits, or other community resources.
Which type of care does my loved one need?
The right type of care depends on your loved one’s needs. If they need skilled nursing, therapy, wound care, medication management, or recovery support after an illness or hospitalization, home health care may be appropriate. If they need help with daily routines, companionship, errands, or personal care, non-medical home care may be a better fit.
